Description:
Napoleon is standing on a rocky headland named “Elba” and is yelling at the Prince of Wales, who is standing on another headland labelled “England.” Napoleon complains that the British have deprived him of his real wife, while the Prince of Wales, lamenting that he cannot get rid of his own. Left: “Get away from my sight, thou valiant Prince, Thy money hath caused my ruin! It hath been the cause of my excile. Likewise of losing my R-L Wife!!! Right:” Be consoled, Boney! you are a fortunate Man to get rid of a R-L wife I cannot get rid of Mine.”
Biography:
Lewis Marks (c1796 – 1855)
Caricaturist, recorded as working between 1814 and 1832,
though his career went on much longer. He initially worked for other
publishers (especially Tegg), but later more usually published his works
himself. Earliest works signed as Lewis Marks, later ones as J Lewis
Marks. Unsigned works published by him always seem to have been etched
(or occasionally lithographed) by himself.
