To the Reverend D.E. Jones

1871 COLONIAL ILLUMINATED PRESENTATIONS David Evans Jones 1838-1901 Sketcher and Anglican clergyman, entered Trinity College, Dublin but was forced to discontinue his studies because of ill-health. Arriving in NSW 1857 he deserted at Newcastle and made his way to John Hawdon’s Kiora Station, near Moruya (NSW), where his father was living as tutor to the Hawdon children. Soon afterwards Jones returned to Goulburn and became a theology student under the city’s first Anglican bishop, Mesac Thomas, who ordained him deacon in 1865 and priest in 1866. After a temporary appointment to the parish of Moruya, he became diocesan inspector of church schools. His first independent parish was Araluen, then Albury (1868-72), Tumut (1872-76), Deniliquin (1877-79) and Bega (1880-85). Due to ill health he moved to Sydney in 1886 as rector of St Mark’s, Granville. He died at Granville in 1901, survived by his second wife Emily Jane whom he had married in 1873. Superbly illuminated colonial presentation signed by Thomas Mitchell and dated 22nd December 1871. It indicates that the Reverend Jones resigned due to some “extreme circumstances” and that the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds was given by the parishioners of his second parish at Albury.
