Biography:

Samuel Chamberlain (1895-1975)

Etcher and lithographer, writer and teacher. Chamberlain was born in Cresco, Iowa in 1895 and was educated at the University of Washington, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Royal College of Art in London. He studied under Edouard Henri Léon in Paris and Malcolm Osborne in London. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Chamberlain taught and lectured on etching, drypoint, and soft ground etchings.  Chamberlain created his first lithograph in 1923 and in the following year produced his first of many drypoint .

He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York City; the Society of Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Chicago Society of Etchers, and many other esteemed organizations. His awards include an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1925 and a gold medal at the Boston Tercentenary in 1930.
