Rare engraving from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s third and final voyage. All other later copies made of this image by other publishers were unauthorised, usually smaller and inferior in quality.

Description of the caps, 'are generally painted blue and green' and decorated 'with the beards of whales, upon which they place beads and some of them fix two or three small carved pieces of bone (in the form of an image) upon the upper part, and on one side' Ellis (1782) II, 47.
