Rare engraving from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s third and final voyage. All other later copies made of this image by other publishers were unauthorised, usually smaller and inferior in quality.

Cook anchored in Resolution Cove (Bligh Island) and Hope Bay (Nootka Sound), carrying out much needed repairs to the ships and where Webber recorded the native peoples, habitations and scenery.

Portrait of a woman of Nootka Sound, wearing a cedar bark rain cape with a sea otter fur collar and a basketry rain hat with a bulbous top decorated with scenes of whale-hunting. Cook, Journals III, 2, 1325-6.

'Both sexes bore their ears, to which they hang various ornaments chiefly made of Copper...Besides these some have suspended to the ears long straps either of leather or plating that reach as low as the breast.. Both Men and Women paint their faces, their colours are black, read and white...' Cook, Journals III, i, 311-314.

Biography:

John Webber (1752 - 1793)

Official artist on Cook's third and last voyage. The reasons for the voyage were to return Omai and explore the possibility of a north-west passage along the North American continent. Webber was required to "give a more perfect idea thereof than can be formed by written description." Webber's oeuvre from the voyage was the most comprehensive record of sights in the Pacific region ever produced.
