The map shows the Dutch discoveries made by by Jan Carstenz on the western side of Cape York Peninsula in 1623 and the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his second voyage in 1643, on the northern and western coasts of Australia. Although Tasman sailed between New Guinea and mainland Australia he missed discovering the Strait named after the Portuguese explorer Luiz Vaez De Torres. Torres 1612 report of his voyage wasn’t discovered until 1762 by Dalrymple who named the strait after him. Interestingly the southern coast of New Guinea lacks the name “Duyfken Eylandt” which appeared for the first time on Jansson’s map of 1630 titled, “Insularum Indiae Orientalis Nova Descriptio”. After leaving Banda Jansz had sailed and landed on the southern coast of New Guinea and named it Duyfkens Eylandt and when it was first issued in 1630, was the first printed map to show a number of William Janszsoon’s 1606 discoveries made on the the first European voyage to land on Australia.
