The Olympia opened in Paris in April of 1893 as the first establishment to call itself a “music-hall”…From the start, the Olympia exploited feminine allure for all it was worth whatever its various revues were called, they always featured beautiful girls in revealing costumes…Pal, freshly arrived from London, was a perfect choice to create one of Olympia’s first show posters. His well-proportioned, realistically drawn beauties projected a sensuality no other posterist could match.

The series,Les Maitres de l’Affiche(The Masters of the Poster ) took five years to produce from 1895 to1900.
It is one of the most prestigious and influential art publications in history. This series features the most outstanding posters of the late 19th century when the medium was only used for commercial advertising. During the 19th century the poster celebrated its golden era under the hands of famous artist such as, Cheret, Toulouse Lautrec, Mucha and Steinlen. They elevated the poster from a commercial medium to innovative art form. By the 1890s, the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the eye of the public, but it’s best examples were already being regarded as works of art, to be exhibited, reviewed in journals and collected.
In 1895, the Imprimerie Chaix firm published reduced chromolithographic versions of over 200 the best posters of the period by more than 90 great artists. This ChaixpublicationLes Maitres de l’Affiche, was issued as separate numbered lithographs, every month for 60 months from 1895 to 1900.
Of the 97 artists represented all were prominent artists of the day.
Each lithograph was issued with an embossed seal at the lower right marking its authenticity.

Jean de Paleologu (1855-1942)
Paleologu was a Romanian poster artist, painter, and illustrator, who often signed his works Pal and was active in France and the United States. Born Jean de Paleologu in Bucharest, he trained in England, then returned to Romania and attended a military academy, before visiting London again several times before moving to Paris He left Paris for the United States in 1900. Paleologu illustrated Petits poèmes russes (Small Russian Poems) by Catulle Mendès, which was published by Charpentier in 1893. His work also appeared in many periodicals, including Vanity Fair, Strand Magazine, New York Herald Tribune, Plume, Rire, Cocorico, Froufrou, Sans-Gêne, and Vie en Rose. He also painted portraits of comedians and music-hall performers and created some of the most influential poster advertisements for bicycle manufacturers (such as the Déesse) and cycling events, often featuring beautiful women. During the latter part of his life in the United States, he worked in applied graphics: at first magazines, later ads and publicity for the auto, film and animation industries.
