Wagner was an artist, and photographer born Offenbach, Germany. Wagner produced watercolours, pastels and oil paintings as well as painting over enlarged photographs. Arrived in Grafton, New South Wales on the ‘Ceasar Goddefroy’, in 1856. From the early 1860s he worked as a painter and photographer at a studio in Prince Street, Grafton. Photographer, J. W. Lindt worked for him from 1863. Wagner enjoyed a high local reputation and always retained strong ties with the local German community.
