Mentelle was a French geographer born in Paris in 1730. He studied under Jean-Baptiste Louis Crevier at the College of Beauvais before becoming professor of Geology and History at the Ecole Militaire. He was a founding member Institut National des Sciences et des Arts in 179. Some of Mentelle’s published works are; Geographie Comparee1778, Atlas Universel1779 and Cours Complet de Cosmographie, de Chronologie, de Geographie et d’Histoire1801.
