Description:

Rare early Pro Hart artist proof etching of H.M.S. Buffalo, signed in blue lower right.

The Buffalo first reached Australia in 1833 after being fitted out to carry convicts to New South Wales. It was on its return to Portsmouth in 1834 that Captain John Hindmarsh commissioned the ship to transport free settlers to the new colony of South Australia. The Buffalo brought the first settlers of the colony of South Australia in 1836, unloading its passengers at present day Glenelg.

Kevin Charles "Pro" Hart (1928-2006)

Pro Hart was an Australian artist, born in Broken Hill, New South Wales, who was considered the father of the Australian Outback painting movement and whose  works are widely admired for capturing the true spirit of the outback. He grew up on his family's sheep farm in Menindee, New South Wales and was nicknamed "Professor" (hence "Pro") during his younger days, when he was known as an inventor.
