Description:

Fine artist proof etching of Perth University, Winthrop Hall by Gayfield Shaw.

The Hall was named after Sir John Winthrop Hackett, inaugural Chancellor of the University. A bequest from his estate funded the construction of several buildings including the hall. It was designed by architect Conrad Sayce in 1927 and completed in 1932. Many artistic embellishments by well known Australian artists were incorporated into the design of the interior. These include Napier Waller’s mosaic of the Five Lamps of Learning and the wooden beams supporting the ceiling were painted with Aboriginal motifs by George Benson.
