Description:

Extremely rare map of the country near Brisbane showing the coal fields of the area from Sub-enclosure in Enclosure 4 in Sir C. A. Fitz-Roy's Despatch of 18th December 1853. There is a colour key at lower left indicates the various mineralogy. 

Note a facsimile was published in 1900.

Biography:

John Arrowsmith (1790-1873)

Arriving in London in 1810 Arrowsmith immediately joined his uncle's cartographic firm. His first publication was his celebrated London Atlas, which became one of the most admired atlases of the period. He was one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the council until he retired. In 1863 he received the patron's gold medal for his contribution to geographic sciences. This map s a superb example of Arrowsmith's meticulous style and remains one of the finest nineteenth century maps of the area.
