Description:

A romanticised view of the Australian landscape from a sketch made at the infant penal colony that was sent back to England for engraving. Early artists attempting to capture the Australian landscape created works that reflected the darker light of Europe and it was not until the landscapes by John Glover in the 1830's that artists and engravers in Australia would create works that were truly Australian.

Biography:

Robert Cleveley (1747-1809)

Third brother of James Cleveley who was famous painting the death of Cook. This engraving is from the first account of the infant colony at Sydney Cove from information collected by Governer Phillip.
