Diptych woodblock by Utagawa Toyonobu of two famous rulers of the C17th century in their boyhood: Hiyoshimaru (Hideyoshi 1536-1598) playing with a hoop and Takechiyo (Tokugawa Iemitsu 1604-1651) in palanquin surrounded by his samurai attendants from the series, ‘Newly Selected Records of the Taikô Hideyoshi,  (Shinsen Taikôki)

The series tells the story of the ascension of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and his famous vassals.The Taikoki is the famous biography of Hideyoshi Toyotomi by Oze Hoan published in 1626.

Utagawa Toyonobu (1859-1896) 

Toyonobu was the grandson of Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), and the son of Kunisada’s daughter Kunihisa. He was especially known for his pictures of heroes. He was one of the most promising young artist of the Utagawa School but died young in 1886.
