Cook explored the Alaska Peninsula 16 to 22 June 1778 and recorded the canoes of the native peoples.

The two figures in the top canoe were from Prince William Sound while the single canoeist was a native of Unalaska.

'Several of the larger Canoes saluted us, by making a Circuit round the ships and giving 3 Halloos at their departure. they paddle in most excellent time, the foremost man every 3d or 4th Stroke making flourishes with his paddle. the halloo is a single note in which they all join, swelling it out in the middle and letting the Sound die away.

'...his Canoe was longer & narrower than those we saw in the river.' Cook Journals III, 1, 349.
