Lithograph by Albert Charles Auguste Racinet (1825–1893) from his monumental series, L’Ornement polychrome (Color Ornament).

Racinet’s L’Ornement polychrome, was an important record of the use of colour in ornamentation and decorative arts from all over the world and throughout history, to the end of the 18th century.  Depicted, are ornaments used in architecture, painting, woodwork, metalwork, leatherwork and textiles. This monumental work inspired architecture and decorative arts manufacturing.

Albert Charles Auguste Racinet (1825 - 1893)

Racinet was a French, illustrator, painter and author of books on costumes and ornaments. He trained as a lithographer and draftsman,  with his father and at the Paris School of Drawing. He worked at the publisher Firmin Didot et Cie, as an engraver and artistic director from 1869 to 1888, and his two major works are L'Ornement polychrome and Le costume historique.  Albert Racinet received the Legion of Honour on August 5 , 1878 .
