Australian Federation Stereo card of the Commonwealth Procession, with the Wool Arch, Bridge Street, 1st January 1901, by George Rose.
Sydney celebrated Australia becoming a Federation with a grand procession through Macquarie Street, Bridge Street, George Street and College Street, and ending at the amphitheatre in Centennial Park where 100,000 people witnessed Lord Hopetoun, Australia’s the first Governor, being sworn in. The procession made its way through a series of nine archways spanning the streets along the route.
Biography:
George Rose (1861-1942)
Rose was a Melbourne photographer who started his photographic career around 1880 producing stereoscopic or 3-D images when viewed through a special viewer. He called his business ‘The Rose Stereograph Company’ and he toured the world with his 3-D camera, producing stereographs for the home and overseas markets.
