Description:

Rare large scale chart of the coast of south eastern Australia from Cape Nelson, Victoria, north to Byron Bay and New Zealand. Insets of Port Jackson, Storm Bay and Port Dalrymple. 

Original issues in 1819, this chart is updated to 1837. Published by J.W. Norie at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy, London. Tooley 930

Mapmaker:

John William Norie (1772-1843)

English hydrographer, chart maker, writer on navigation and publisher. He commenced his career as a draughtsman for William Heather, running the nautical academy in Leadenhall Stree. In 1813 in he bought a minority share of Heather’s business in partnership with George Wilson. In 1819 he also acquired the business of David Steel and in 1824 he became an agent for the sale of Admiraly charts, as well as chart seller to the East India Company and Trinity House. Norie sold his share of the business in 1840 and retired to Edinburgh. The business continued under Charles Wilson as ‘Norie & Wilson’.
