Description:
Spectacular large and detailed sea chart with extensive soundings, rhumb lines and a key with ‘explanations’ of the English Channel. In typical Rochette style with subtle decorative elements which include “hook” shaped curves on the dot lines showing the course of the Soundings. Published by William Faden. William Faden (1750-1836) Cartographer and publisher who took over Thomas Jefferys’s business in 1771. He also held the position of Geographer to His Majesty the King and the Prince of Wales. Faden’s work was of the highest standard and he was chosen to produce the very first map for the Ordnance Survey – a map of Kent in four sheets – in 1801.
William Faden (1750 - 1836)
Faden was a cartographer and publisher who took over Thomas Jefferys's business in 1771 and held the position of Geographer to His Majesty the King and the Prince of Wales. Faden's work was of the highest standard and he was chosen to produce the very first map for the Ordnance Survey - a map of Kent in four sheets - in 1801.
