Description:

Very rare map of King George III Sound with insets displaying the Hergest’s Islands, Chatham Island, A Sketch of the Snares and the Island of Oparo. Vancouver, who served as a midshipman on Cook’s voyages, was placed in command of an expedition to the Northwest Coast to determine England’s rights under the Nootka convention of 1790. In 1791, Vancouver claimed ‘New Holland’ as a British possession and named Albany’s harbour, King George III Sound, after the reigning monarch. From the second English edition of this very rare work. Interestingly the copper plates of the charts contained in the first edition of this work were all stolen. An advertisement accompanying this publication stated that ‘the general chart, and that of the New Discoveries, & are re-engraved’.
