Description:

A rare Irish issued satirical cartoon published by J. Le Petit of 20 Capel St, Dublin, based on the George Cruikshank (1792-1878) cartoon first published, 25 October 1818 by S.W. Fores, 50 Piccadilly, London

It depicts a young woman who invites the young Dandy to sit next to her, causing him to blush. At her foot is an open book with the words, Art and Love.

Caption at top left: “Come and sit down my dear little Dandy, And I’ll give you a bit of White Sugar Candy.”
Caption at top right: “No Miss I thank you, I really cannot stay, For between you and I, I’ve Nothing more to say.”

 

John Le Petit (1798 - 1820)

Joseph Le Petit (fl. 1798-1820) Le Petit was a Dublin publisher of caricatures, of whom there is little biographical information of, other than where he operated from and that he had a business association with another Dublin publisher J. Sidebotham. Both their names and the of 20 Capel Street address appears on a number of prints published between 1815 and 1820.
