Description:
Rare map showing the intended voyage of the First Fleet to Botany Bay and made to capitalise in the public interest in New Holland and the penal colony that was going to be established at Botany Bay. The map was published prior to the actual departure of the First Fleet with its first transport of convicts.
The Australian continent is shown with Cook’s discoveries on the
east coast in 1769 shown, as well as those by the Dutch. The southern
coast is shown as an imaginary line from Nuyts discoveries in 1627 at
present day Ceduna to Tasman’s first voyage discoveries in 1642 of Van Diemen’s Land,
shown joined to the mainland.

Surveyor, cartographer, map seller and engraver. Little biographical information exists for Andrews although his output of maps of America and Australia indicate that he was well known in the 18th century map trade.
