Description:
Late c.19th copy of the Dauphin chart which was drawn by the Portuguese between 1530 and 1536.
It is thought to be the earliest known map of Australia. The name Iave la Grande [i.e. Java] is written vertically on the Australian continent. When the Dauphin map is redrawn to the Mercator projection, it does resemble Australia. Shows Java and Sumatra situated very close to the Australian coastline. With place names in Portuguese.
