Description:
Rare map showing the discoveries made by William Dampier and the tracks of his ship the Roebuck, subsequent to his visit to Shark Bay in western Australia in 1699. This voyage resulted in the first published account of Australian flora and fauna.
The map extends from Rote Island, Timor to New Britain which he named. Dampier had attempted to put the Roebuck at Kupang but had been initially turned away by the Dutch governor of Fort Concordia who had feared that they may have been pirates. He was allowed to anchor for some weeks at a distance and perform the necessary repairs to the ship. On 3rd December 1699 he rounded the northern coast of New Guinea and sailed east charting the coast.
