Chart of the world on Mercator’s Projection showing magnetic variations as set out by Edmond Halley 1700 to solve the problem of magnetic variation in respect of measuring a ships longitude.accurately. A table at lower left explains the placement of the magnetic lines on the map.

Australia is shown with the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages in 1742-4.

Emmanuel Bowen (1693 - 1767)

Bowen was an engraver, cartographer, publisher and print seller. Born in Wales the son of Owen Bowen, gentleman of Talley, Carmarthen. Apprenticed (Merchant Taylor) to Charles Price 1709. He married Elizabeth Boreman 1715 at St. Andew by the Wardrobe in 1716. He was warden of the Masonic Lodge IX in 1723 and master of a Masonic lodge in Carmarthen in 1726. He appeared on Samuel Sympson's list of the leading London engravers compiled in about 1726. He produced numerous maps and atlases during his career.
