Very detailed map of China by Thomas Kitchen based on the extensive the surveys made of all of China by the French Jesuits 1708-1716 by the order of the Kangxi Emperor. At lower right is a decorative title cartouche and at lower right an ‘explanation’ key.
At top left is an extensive description of Bowen’s sources. The Kingdom of Corea (Korea) and Taiwan is named ‘Tay-Wan or Formosa’.

Working at premises at the Star in London’s Holborn as an engraver and publisher, Kitchin produced a wide variety of maps for atlases and magazines. He often worked in conjunction with Emanuel Bowen.
