Description:
Rare map of Asia, extending from the middle east to Japan. There are a number of references to the extent of the historical knowledge of the ancient cartographers. This decorative map was part of a set of 22 maps dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester. Wells was a leading English mathematician and geographer, Wells issued a “New Set of Maps” dedicated to the Duke of Gloucester. This set demonstrated cartographical honesty in representing the Far East. Wells would leave huge areas blank rather than fill unknown regions with fictitious coastlines. According to Tooley “Wells was regarded as one of the most accurate geographers of his time.”
Edward Wells (1667 - 1727)
Wells was the son of Edward Wells, the Vicar of Corsham, Wiltshire. Educated at Westminster School from 1680. He won a scholarship to Christ Church, Oxford in 1686 where he graduated with a MA in 1693 and went on to have a turbulent career in the ministry. Wells was a prolific writer translating several religious and secular Latin and Greek works into English. He also wrote on astronomy, chronology, arithmetic and geometry, although his best known work is his atlas, A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography first issued in 1700.
