A New Map of Asia drawn from the latest Discoveries 1791.

The first and earliest edition of this map, more commonly found with a &quot1st January 1794&quot date imprint that is often incorrectly cited as being the first edition. Includes interesting historical information such as &quotCloats I&quot (Western Australia) Now named Point Cloates on the Pilbara coast of WA. It was first sighted in 1618 by Lenaert Jacobszoon and supercargo Willem Janszoon, in the VOC ship Mauritius and originally thought to be an island. It status as an island remained as late as 1827 when Phillip Parker King suggested that the &quotisland&quot was a peninsula. The nomenclature on the east coast is based on the discoveries made by Cook’s on his first voyage. Although issued after Governor Arthur Phillip founding of the settlement at Sydney Cove and the map doesn’t include information contained in the subsequent publication of his account in 1789. Tasmania is shown joined to the mainland.
