Description:
Scarce c.18th map of central Asia and China by Edward Wells based on Nicholas de Fer’s map. The map extends from the Black Sea to Japan and south as far as Macao. An elaborate title at top left contains a dedication to His Highness William the Duke of Gloucester with the Royal Crest. There are two insets at top right; 1. N.E. of China and 2. NNE, and East of China. At lower left is scale of distances. Wells included this map of the China in the second edition of his atlas, A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography, published in 1704 and which is identified by the addition of the number ’29’ below the title.Â
The Duke of Gloucester was attending Oxford where Wells was a teacher of mathematics and geography.Â

Edward Wells (1667 - 1727)
Wells was the son of Edward Wells, the Vicar of Corsham, Wiltshire. Educated at Westminster School from 1680. He won a scholarship to Christ Church, Oxford in 1686 where he graduated with a MA in 1693 and went on to have a turbulent career in the ministry. Wells was a prolific writer translating several religious and secular Latin and Greek works into English. He also wrote on astronomy, chronology, arithmetic and geometry, although his best known work is his atlas, A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography first issued in 1700.
