Description:

Rare and decorative map published the year after the start of the war with Spain, showing the tracks of the Spanish galleons from Cartagena and Havana, as well as British ships to the Caribbean.

At top are two elaborately framed portraits of Admiral Robert Blake (1598-1657) who is recognised as the founder of Englands naval supremacy and vice Commodore Edward Vernon (1684-1757) who led a fleet in the War of Jenkin’s Ear in 1739.

 

Emmanuel Bowen (1693 - 1767)

Bowen was an engraver, cartographer, publisher and print seller. Born in Wales the son of Owen Bowen, gentleman of Talley, Carmarthen. Apprenticed (Merchant Taylor) to Charles Price 1709. He married Elizabeth Boreman 1715 at St. Andew by the Wardrobe in 1716. He was warden of the Masonic Lodge IX in 1723 and master of a Masonic lodge in Carmarthen in 1726. He appeared on Samuel Sympson's list of the leading London engravers compiled in about 1726. He produced numerous maps and atlases during his career.
