Description:

Town plan of Valetta which includes an extensive list showing places of interest and decorative title cartouche with biblical scene. Since 1530, Malta had been ruled by the Knights Hospitalier, a religious order which fled Rhodes in 1522 under threat of persecution from the Ottomans. Valetta, the capital, was founded in 1566 during the reconstruction of the islands after the Great Siege of Malta, when the Maltese successfully defended the islands against Ottoman invasion. The order became known as the Knights of Malta and ruled the islands captured by Napoleon in 1798. Malta was ceded to the British at the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
