A large and impressive early view of Sydney Cove taken from the battery at Dawes Point looking east. Robert Campbell’s substantial stone warehouse and cottage are featured in the centre of the image, while on the opposite shore are four windmills positioned behind the first Government House. At the lower right corner the artist is seated on a rock with sketch pad on his knee. An important engraving of Macquarie’s Sydney. Rare.

Biography:
Walter Preston (1777-?)
Preston was an engraver sentenced to death for highway robbery and transported to the penal settlement of Newcastle for fourteen years in 1814 under the command of Captain Wallis. He engraved twelve views of NSW for Wallis and when these were subsequently published they were attributed not to Preston but Wallis.
