Description:
From Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and regarded as the first modern atlas in having all the maps of a similar size and format. Extensively decorated with a fret work design and corner medallions of the four continents in miniature. This world map is a rendering of the inhabited earth as known in the classical era and occupies the central section of a much larger oval frame. The map extends as far as the Indies and south to Madagascar. Made by Ortelius on the basis of the knowledge of seventeen classical authors and their works. Later discoveries prior to Columbus, in the south and east Asia by the Portuguese, and in the North by Richard Hakluyt are also referred to. 1624 Pviij References: BRO OAM 186 Pviij ill pg 186 NLA OMD Bib ID 3356798 (1609) SHI MOTW pg 176 pl 143
