Description:

Celestial map of Ursa Major and Minor.

Ursa Major also known as the Great Bear is a constellation in the northern sky, its Latin name means “greater she-bear”, standing as a reference to and in direct contrast with nearby Ursa Minor, the lesser bear. In antiquity, it was one of the original 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy and is now the third largest constellation of the 88 modern constellations.

From Abraham Rees, Cyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature made by 100 contributors, most of whom were nonconformists. They were specialists in their fields, covering the arts and humanities, agriculture, science, technology, and medicine. Artists like John Farey, Jr., and the engraver Wilson Lowry made the images.

Mapmaker:

Abraham Rees 1743-1825

Abraham Rees was a Welsh nonconformist minister, and compiler of Rees’s Cyclopædia.
