The Royal Cock Pit was located in Dartmouth Street near Whitehall and was the haunt of men form all social classes from the 17th century until its final demolition in 1816. The engraving depicts a cock fight which is lit up by a lowered candelabra.

Biography:

Samuel Howitt (1756-1822)

Howitt was from a Nottinghamshire family of squires, Howitt became a professional artist specialising in sporting subjects. He worked as a drawing master in Ealing and then in 1783 he exhibited for the first time at the Incorporated Society of Artists. He married Thomas Rowlandson’s sister.
