Description:
Rare early edition of of a botanical woodcut from one of the most famous and influential C16th botanical books ever published.
Bock first published Kreutterbuch (literally translated “plant book”) without woodcut illustrations in 1539, the first illustrated edition that included David Kandel’s famous woodcuts was first issued in 1546. The woodcut offered by us, is from the very early 1552 edition and is with strong definition to the wood cut lines and also with original hand colouring.

Biography:
Hieronymus Bock (1498-1554) was a German botanist, physician, and Lutheran minister who began the transition from medieval botany to the modern scientific world view by arranging plants by their relation or resemblance. In 1519 he inscribed at the university of Heidelberg and married Eva Victor in 1523, and was schoolteacher in Zweibrucken for nine years. He became the prince’s physician and caretaker of the kitchen garden of the count palatine and in 1533 received a life-time position as a Lutheran minister in nearby Hornbach where he stayed up to his death in 1554.
David Kandel (1520–1592) was a Renaissance artist and scientific illustrator. Little can be verified of his life. He was probably born in Strasbourg, in 1520, married in 1554 and 33 years later, in 1587, he was named “owner of a house”. David Kandel died in 1592. His woodcuts for Bock’s Kreuterbuch were seen at the time as the best of botanical art for the next two centuries.
