Description:

Ornate map of the Islands of the Aegean Sea by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, published by Giacomo Giovanni Rossi in Rome, 1685. A decorative title cartouche comprising of the Greek God of the sea, Poseidon on the right and one of Posedeia on the left. At top right is a decorative information panel.

This map was one of the most detailed and accurate of its time and exhibits several cartouches of Greek gods and mythical creatures. There is also a dedication to
Conte Ritiero Marscotti, Senatore di Bologna.

Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643-1695)

Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola was born in Montorsello, near Vignola. He studied literature at Bologna and at the end of the studies he was hired as a secretary by the Marquis of Obizzi di Ferrara . Later he moved to Venice , becoming a well-known geographer. He made a trip to Paris , as a French ambassador to Venice returning to Louis XIV court.
