Astrapia nigra (Gmelin, JF, 1788) is restricted to the Arfak Mountains in Vogelkop Peninsula, West Papua. Latham was an English physician, naturalist and author. Known as the "grandfather" of Australian ornithology, Latham was able to examine specimens of Australian birds in the last twenty years of the 18th century, many from the Sydney Cove.
