In 1604 Hondius bought the plates of Mercator’s Atlas and to compete with Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, added thirty-seven new maps of his own, including three of Asia. The map features two elaborate cartouches at top, one for the title and is further embellished with ships and sea creatures. Hondius has improved on the cartography of Japan and Korea.
