Description:
Elaborately decorated title page from one of the great mapmakers of the Dutch Golden Age and a relfection of the enormous wealth derived from East Indies trading activities by the VOC. This is Visscher’s title page from his Atlas Minor published in 1680 and this example is in full original hand colouring, with the lavish use of pure gold leaf to the trumpets, robed figure on the left and the mapping instruments. Suberbly designed and engraved by the famous French painter and art theorist Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) who was the most sought after artist in Amsterdam at the time.

Lairesse was a Dutch Golden Age painter and art theorist. His importance grew in the period following the death of Rembrand. His treatises on painting and drawing, Grondlegginge der teekenkonst (1701), based on geometry and Groot Schilderboek (1707), were highly influential on 18th-century painters.
