Description:
Detailed map of Australia made just after of the first gold discoveries in New South Wales and Victoria. All states have a list of counties and there is good information on the explored and settled coastal areas. John Eyres, Mt’ Hopeless’ is marked around a dotted lake. Eyre noted in his account of his explorations ; ‘cheerless and hopeless indeed was the prospect before us.’ The great salt lake, he went on, ‘was now visible to the north and to the east; and I had at last ascertained, beyond all doubt, that its basin, commencing near the head of Spencer’s Gulf, and following the course of Flinders range (bending round its northern extreme to the southward), constituted those hills the termination of the island of South Australia, for such I imagine it once to have been. This closed all my dreams as to the expedition…’.

Active engraver, cartographer and printer. Born in Devon in about 1792. As many printers of the period he was declared bankrupt 22 Jan 1835 and worked for a number of map publishers until his death in 1863.
