Description:

Early German view of Bangkok.

Bangkok was originally a small trading town on the west bank of the lower Chao Phraya River. Following the the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese in 1767, the newly declared King Taksin established a capital at Thonburi, a suburb in modern-day Bangkok. When Taksin’s reign ended in 1782, King Rama I (Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke) reconstructed the capital on the east bank of the river.

Freidrich Johann Justin Bertuch

A successful entrepreneur and a man of the eighteenth century ‘Englightenment.’ Orphaned at 15 he lived with his uncle and pursued an education in theology and law. He eventually became a publisher and the largest employer in his home town of Weimar. This image is from the first pictorial encylopedia for children which was a landmark in educational publishing.
