The Apsley River was named by John Oxley who wrote wrote in his journal that he was "lost in astonishment at the sight of this wonderful natural sublimity" when he sighted the falls on 13 September 1818. Beckett Falls is the first of two drops of the falls on the river that are situated about 20 kms east of Walcha in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.
