Matthias Merian (1593 – 1650)

Born in Basel, he learned the art of engraving in Zurich, then worked and studied in strasbourg, Nancy, and Paris. He moved to Frankfurt in 1616 where he worked for the publisher Johann de Bry, whose daughter Maria Magdalena he married in 1617. In 1620 they moved back to Basel, only to return three years later to Frankfurt where Merian took over the publishing house of his father-in-law became famous for his detailed town plans in his unique stile. Rare.
