Description:

An exceptionally rare and impressive large scale panorama of Brisbane published in 1881.

This artist for this magnificent lithograph is unknown and the Illustrated Sydney News in advertisements promoting the Supplement only stated, by our Special artist. The view if taken from above the gas works with Kangaroo Point to the left and Fortitude Valley on the right and looks towards South Brisbane and the mountains beyond.

Susanna Evans in her book, Historic Brisbane and Its Early Artists’, 1982, pp. 112-3, states that a later, slightly smaller panorama which was also published as a supplement to The Illustrated Sydney News, signed and dated in the plate at lower left ‘W.A. Clarson 1888’, is the first Brisbane panorama of this style and one of the finest printed colonial images of Brisbane.  Drawn (apparently from a balloon above Brisbane) by William Clarson who was the first Secretary of the Art Society of New South Wales. …   Evans gives a detailed account of the content of the image, identifying many of the buildings.“  This is statement is incorrect as our panorama was published in 1881.
