Description:

Detailed map of the British settlements in the Malaysia Peninsula. The Straits Settlements, consisting of Malacca, Dinding, Penang, Singapore and the island of Labuan, were established in 1826 following the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, which transferred possession of Malacca to the British. Shows individual maps of each settlement including two of Singapore, one showing the whole island and the other a plan of the town and harbour. By 1860, the population of Singapore had grown from around 1,000 at the time of the first British settlement to more than 80,000. The map of the island shows Singapore&#8217s development and the proliferation of towns since the first accurate map of Singapore was completed by Philip Jackson in 1824.
