Description:
Map extending from Cape Volney to Wilsons Promonontory and King Island, with the tracks of Le Geographe, Le Naturaliste and Le Casurina in 1802. Baudin having sailed from Van Diemen’s Land on 27 March 1802 sighted land off Wilson’s Promontory. He then passed Western Port not noticing the entrance, however on the following day he sighted the opening, charting and naming it Ile de Anglais (now Phillip Island). Sailing past Cape Schanck he again missed the entrance to Port Phillip and it was only later in Sydney that the French learnt of the bay and accordingly added this information onto their charts.
