Description:
Superb fully hand coloured example of this very large scale two sheet chart of Asia by Tobias Mayer (1723-1762), based on the charts issued in, Neptune Oriental the maritime atlas by Jean-Baptiste Mannevillette (1707-1780). The map extends from India to the Mariana Islands and south to the tip of northern Australia. A decorative title cartouche composed of military weapons and distance scale is at lower left.

Tobias Mayer (1723 - 1762)
Mayer was a self taught mathematician. He was employed as a cartographer in Nurmberg from 1746, when he began working for the Homann Heirs company. In 1749, while working for the Homann Company, Mayer produced a map of the moon measuring seven and a half inches in diameter. It was the first map of the moon which used accurately measured positions of the craters.
