Description:

This is Davies first published engraving executed in 1922, signed and numbered “No 5-50 Proofs” in pencil.

Roy Davies began wood engraving in 1921 and with his first published print, Cattleman’s Hut. At that time, Lionel Lindsay was also beginning to work in the wood engraving technique, and through the illustrator David Barker, Lindsay contacted Davies and invited him to his studio. In 1923 Davies then exhibited 12 wood engravings at Tyrrell’s Limited, Elizabeth Street, Sydney, in an Exhibition of Woodcuts.

Biography:

Lewis Roy Davies (1897-1979)

Printmaker and the first principal of the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College. Davies was born in Sydney and studied at the Sydney Art School under Julian Ashton and Mildred Lovett in 1913. In 1921 he began wood engraving with assistance from Lionel Lindsay and was included in Tyrell’s exhibition of woodcuts 1923.
