Description:

Hermmansburg watercolour by Maurice Namatjira, the fifth son of Albert and Rubina Namatjira. He took up painting in the late 50s.

“Hermannsburg school”, the Hermannsburg mission was set up in 1877 to provide religious instruction to the Arrente tribe. In 1934 artist, Rex Battarbee, exhibited a number of  watercolours of the surrounding McDonnell Ranges area. More than 300 Arrernte people viewed this exhibition. On his return to the mission 2 years later, Rex gave Albert Namatjira painting lessons and he soon became the leading exponent of the Hermannsburg School and teacher to many Arrente artists.
